Amherst Site Work

Construction schedule for the Amherst site

This project is coming about as a result of cooperation between Amherst College and Habitat for Humanity. The College has donated three acres of college land to Habitat. You can read more about this, and view the architect's power point presentation about it, here.

The Amherst College chapter of Habitat for Humanity is very involved in this project and has a website devoted to it at www.amherst.edu/~habitat.

The site is near the corner of  Southeast Street and Stanley Street in Amherst. Here is an architects' vision of the four homes and their environment. In this view, Southeast Street comes in from the left, and the drive to the four prospective homes is off of Stanley Street.

The work will be regularly scheduled for Saturdays from 9 to 4, and Sundays from noon to 4. Other days may be scheduled by arrangement. Amherst College groups, students, faculty, and staff will have first priority in scheduling work at the site, and all Saturdays are reserved for Amherst College groups.

To reserve a date for yourself or a group to work at this site, click on the VolunteerUP icon on our home page (or just click here) and register as a volunteer (if you have not registered already.) Sign in with your name and password, and on the calendar you will be able to see what dates are not yet filled for this worksite. When you sign up for a site and date, you will be asked how many "guests" you will bring in your group, and for the name of your group. If it is just you, then of course you will skip those questions.

If you are the leader of a group of young people (ages 14 through 17) which intends to come to a Habitat site, please read the statement of expectations for these groups.

Volunteers may wish to look at Habitat for Humanity University's online "Residential Construction Basics."

A map showing the location of the site is available. The location is near the corner of Southeast Street and Stanley Street.

Progress report (11/26/07)

The first of the four houses (#24 Stanley Street) is nearing completion with plans for the family to move in January.

Work on the second house (#18) has started – the foundation is in and we are starting to frame up the walls – and hopefully get a roof over it by the time heavy winter weather arrives.
